"Every love story has a heartbeat. This one has a breath."

Heart/Lung follows Patricia D. Smith, an ambitious pulmonologist who struggles to balance her career with her identity as a closeted lesbian in a homophobic medical world. The story begins in 1984, when she meets her first patient — a spirited college grad named Sandy — and the two forge an instant, dangerous connection.

Spanning decades, this genre-blending memory play weaves a Greek chorus of pulmonology patients, spoken word, and poetic monologues as Patricia is forced to choose between her truth and her survival — and to live with what that choice costs.

Written and directed by AJ Dwayne, this groundbreaking women-led queer play has been 15 years in the making, beginning in a playwriting class back in 2010.
